Science Communication and Outreach
I have a strong interest in communicating science to a general audience. Good science communication allows public access to new and accurate information, bolsters a stronger understanding of the research process and its relevance to society, and provides context to the human existence.

I love to engage in outreach through general audience tours and seminars, K-12 education, video production, press, and social media (including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram). I also reach out to state and federal elected representatives about issues that matter to me scientifically and personally.

Science Uncorked is a science outreach seminar series I co-founded with Ellie Fairbairn and our local wine bar, Gourmet au Bay. We host talks approximately twice monthly, featuring the work of researchers at UC Davis Coastal and Marine Sciences Institute and elsewhere. I regularly visit K-12 classrooms (virtually and in person) and host students for tours and activities at Bodega Marine Laboratory. From 2014-2016, I co-created and co-directed ISOpods (Inquiry-based Science Outreach Pods) to develop hands-on educational materials aligned with Next Generation Science Standards, train teachers, and facilitated implementation of marine science curriculum in K-12 schools. The materials created for ISOpods continue to be used in K-12 outreach and engagement activities.
